This Monday, Vladimir Putin approved the granting of passports to the inhabitants of the four regions annexed by Russia: Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia.
The presidential decree includes the regulations for the application and granting of Russian identity documents to those who renounce Ukrainian citizenship.
That includes children under the age of 14, who can automatically become Russian citizens, according to the TASS agency.
The passport will never be granted in case the resident of those four annexed regions refuses to swear allegiance to the Russian state.
Volodimir Zelenski warns of a Russian offensive before the end of the year
Applicants must receive the passport in hand within a period of no more than ten days from when they submitted the necessary documentation, according to the decree.
At the end of September Putin signed the annexation of the four Ukrainian regions during a ceremony in the Kremlin after they held integration referendums in the Russian Federation whose results have not been recognized by kyiv or the international community.
Ukraine assures that the Kremlin is preparing a major offensive on all fronts in order to conquer these four regions, while the West suspects that Moscow could aspire to take new territories from the neighboring country.
Division before situation with Ukraine
The Russian president also denounced that the West seeks to “divide” Russia in Ukraine.
“Everything is based on the policy of our geopolitical adversaries, who seek to divide Russia, historical Russia,” Putin denounced in an interview, an extract of which was released on Russian television.
“Our goal is another: to unite the Russian people,” he added. The Russian president often refers to the concept of “historic Russia” to argue that Ukrainians and Russians are one people, undermining kyiv’s sovereignty and justifying his offensive in Ukraine.
“We are acting in the right direction, we are protecting our national interests, the interests of our citizens, of our people,” he continued.
During the interview, Putin once again denounced the position of kyiv and its Western allies who, according to him, “reject negotiations.” Putin, on the other hand, is “ready to negotiate with all the participants in this process [para encontrar] acceptable solutions” to the conflict. (YO)
