Before entering the plenary session, the Californian congressman had admitted that he did not have enough votes to become the new president of the United States House of Representatives, although he assured that he would continue to fight to get them.

The Democratic candidate Hakeem Jeffriesfrom New York, has obtained 212 votes while the Republicans who have rebelled against McCarthy have proposed another candidate, the far-right congressman from Arizona andy biggswhich has obtained 10 votes.

Subsequently, successive votes will have to be held until a candidate reaches a majority. If they fail to do so, the Republicans, who control the majority with 222 of the 435 seats, would be forced to present a new candidate.

The last time more than one vote was needed to choose the “speaker” was a century ago. in 1923the president of the Chamber was elected in a ninth ballot, while in 1869 it was achieved after 60 votes, a process that lasted two months.

The House cannot resolve any matter until the “speaker” is appointed, which is the third authority in the United States, after the president, Joe Biden, and the vice president, Kamala Harris, who also presides over the Senate.
