Lula da Silva celebrates the “victory of democracy” during the act of inauguration as president of Brazil

The new President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvahas celebrated this Sunday the “victory of democracy” that allowed him to win the October elections despite the “threats” of the extreme right, which still does not accept its victory.

“If we are here it is thanks to the political consciousness of Brazilian society“, Lula declared before Parliament in his first speech after being sworn in as the new president of Brazil. “It was democracy the great victorious“, which “overcame” the “most violent threats to the freedom of vote”, he pointed out, alluding to the campaign against voting system unleashed by the now former president Jair Bolsonaro, whom he defeated in the October elections.

It is estimated that about 300,000 people gathered this Sunday in the political heart of Brasilia for the inauguration of the president, who takes power for the third time who already held office for two consecutive terms, between 2003 and 2010.

The 77-year-old progressive leader was sworn in before Parliament this Sunday 20 years after first taking possession. Already then, a multitudinous investiture ceremony took place in Brasilia that began, as today, with a parade of Lula in the presidential Rolls Royce.

Delegations from fifty countries

The investiture ceremony has been attended by delegations from more than fifty countries. On behalf of Spain they have attended the King Felipe VIthe foreign minister, Jose Manuel Albaresand the Vice President of the Government, Yolanda Díaz. “Today President Lula is a beacon for the world, a beacon in democratic terms”, the latter stated.

Absence of Bolsonaro

Who has not made an act of presence has been the already former president Jair Bolsonaro, the person who, according to tradition, should have given Lula the presidential sash. Two days ago, a few hours before flying to Florida to avoid participating in the inauguration, Bolsonaro sent this message to his supporters: “If I became president, it was to delay the fall of Brazil in the nefarious left ideology”.

They arrest a man armed with a knife who tried to access the ceremony

Unlike his first inauguration, on this occasion Lula has taken office with a increased deployment of bodyguards and security agents fearing an attack from the extreme right. In fact, the Brazilian Police have confirmed the arrest of an individual who tried to enter armed with a knife at the inauguration ceremony. According to a statement from the Military Police of the Federal District, the man was arrested at 09:00 local time, when he tried to enter the zone of the inauguration party armed with a knife.
