The New Zealand authorities revealed that they need more than 75,000 international workers due to the lack of labor in the national and international markets.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said that since June some 94,000 jobs have been offered to foreign employees and, since then, some 17,000 international workers have already obtained visas to work in the country.
The minister defends that the global shortage contributes to the lack of workers in her country. It is clear that the lack of labor is persistent in all world markets, according to El Comercio.

New Zealand needs nurses, teachers and mechanics
Among other measures, Ardern announced that nurses and doctors will go from this Thursday, December 15, to the green list of employees who directly obtain residence in New Zealand.
From the Immigration Minister, Michael Wood, indicated that New Zealand wants to take advantage of the strength of its economy to attract qualified workers.
“Since the pandemic, 3,474 nurses have arrived in the country, but it’s clear we need to do more to encourage nurses to choose New Zealand,” Wood said.

As of March of next year, other profiles such as teachers, qualified mechanics, crane operators and even butchers will be included in the green list that facilitates the application for residence in New Zealand.
As of December 15, within this so-called ‘Green List’, several health professionals who will be able to acquire these residence facilities:
- midwives
- Specialist doctors who were not included up to now
- registered auditors

Bus and truck drivers will have a time-limited residence path through a sectoral agreement. Likewise, as of March 2023, other professional roles will be added to said list:
- civil construction supervisors
- gas technicians
- Plungers
- Qualified crane operators
- Qualified operators of civil machinery
- Specialized engine mechanics
- Qualified telecommunications technicians
- secondary school teachers
- primary school teachers

The Essential Skills Work visa is for skilled workers whose occupation is listed on the Essential Skills In Demand List.
This visa allows you to work in New Zealand for up to five years, but the duration may depend on your skill level.
For a foreigner to take up a job on this visa, the employer must show that they were unable to hire a New Zealander.
To apply for an Essential Skills work visa, these are the requirements:
- A job offer for a full-time position and a copy of your employment contract.
- Your employer must prove that a New Zealander could not be recruited for the position.
- An Employer Supplement Form describing your job offer (completed by employer).
- A document proving the necessary qualifications (original or certified copy).
- Occupational record (if applicable).
- You also cannot be subject to a period of suspension (the period in which you must spend 12 consecutive months outside of New Zealand).
