A magnitude 6.4 earthquake in California leaves at least two dead and a dozen injured

At least two people have died and another 11 have been injured by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake on the northern coast of California. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (California), about 250 kilometers north of San Francisco, has reported in a statement that the two deceased lost their lives “as a result of medical emergencies” that occurred during or after the earthquake.

At the moment, some 70,000 users are still without electricity in that county, although the companies that offer supply are working to resume the service, as reported in the note.

The Sheriff’s Office has indicated that damage, some of it “significant structural”, is being assessed at facilities such as water and gas lines in the Rio Dell area. Authorities have also detected “moderate damage” to properties in the Eel River Valley. In addition, the California Highway Patrol has received notices that the shaking has caused cracks in an access bridge to Ferndale.

The tremor was registered at 02:34 local time (10:34 GMT), had a depth of 16.1 kilometers and was followed by numerous aftershocks, one of which reached a magnitude of 4.6, according to the Geological Service. of the United States (USGS).

No tsunami warning associated with the earthquake has been registered so far, as confirmed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
