Iran executes man linked to protests over death of Mahsa Amini

A man was hanged this Thursday in Iran in what becomes the first known execution linked to the protests that took place over the death of the young Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by the morality police for not wearing the clothing correct.

The defendant had blocked a street and wounded a member of the Basij paramilitary force with a weapon.

“Mohsen Shekari, a rioter who blocked Sattar Khan Boulevard [en Teherán] on September 25 and stabbed a Basij man with a machete, he was executed on Thursday morning” in the Iranian capital, the judiciary agency Mizan Online reported.

Taliban break promise in Afghanistan and return to public executions

The ruling had been handed down in early January by the Tehran Revolutionary Court and the Supreme Court upheld it on November 20.

The man would have acknowledged guilt and of having used “his weapon with the intention of killing, causing terror and disturbing the order and security of society.”

“He intentionally wounded a Basij with a knife while he was performing his duty and blocked Sattar Khan street in Tehran,” the agency added.

Ten people have the same sentence as Shekari after the demonstrations that brought together women who rejected the restrictive measures.

Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, director of the NGO Iran Human Rights (IHR), said the man had been executed without due process in a farce.

Free expression activist Hosein Ronaghi, recently released from prison, warned authorities: “The execution of any protester will have serious consequences for you. To take the life of one person is to take our lives from all of us. Do you have enough gallows?” he tweeted.

For its part, the United States described this act as a disastrous escalation and said it would hold the Iranian regime “accountable for the brutal violence it is committing against its own people.” (YO)
