A Moscow court has sentenced the Russian politician to eight and a half years in prison Ilia Yashin by “spread false information” about “the actions of the Russian Army” in the Ukrainian war. The deputy denounced the Russian Armed Forces in a live broadcast on his YouTube channel for the war crimes commission in Bucha (Ukraine).

Yashin was accused in a process that began in July, when he was serving 15 days in administrative detention on charges of “disobeying the order of a police officer.”

Amnesty International warned at the time that Yashin could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison under article 207.3 of the Penal Code, amended after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Previously, the opponent Alexey Gorinov He was condemned by the same article, for describing Russia’s actions as a “war”, described as a “special military operation” by the State.

Yashin has argued that his comments about what happened in Bucha are nothing more than his personal opinion about an incident.

In one of the first protest reactions, the NGO Human Rights Watch has lamented the sentence against the opponent as part of the “constant effort” of the Russian authorities to “dismantle and behead the peaceful political opposition and silence any criticism of the war of the Kremlin”.
