More than two thirds of the population lives in authoritarian, hybrid or declining democracies.

The last report of Institute for Democracy in the World warns of a critical situation: more than two thirds of the population lives in authoritarian regimes, hybrids or in declining democracies.

Of the 173 countries that have analysed, a total of 49 support authoritarian regimes (as in China), 20 are hybrids, as is the case in Turkey, while 104 are declining democracies (such as the countries of the European Union).

If in 2011 only 12 democracies fell back, today the number increases alarmingly to 52. Last year, for example, Myanmar or Tunisia ceased to be democracies. The conclusion of the report is clear and dramatic: democracies are weakening, while autocracies are getting stronger.

The situation has also worsened in authoritarian regimes like AfghanistanNicaragua or Iran, where almost 500 dead in protests led by women.

After the start of the invasion of Ukraine, Russia has gone from a hybrid regime to an authoritarian one. Democracy has also deteriorated in countries like Hungary and Poland. In the United States too, during the government of Donald Trump, which culminated in the assault on the Capitol
