Pedro Castillopresident of Peru, has been arrested after being removed by Congressafter having dissolved and an emergency government installed national.
The leftist lawyer Dina Boluarte, until now vice president, has been sworn in as the first female president in the history of Peru. Castillo is located at the headquarters of the Lima Police prefecture.
The opposition and various ministers of his government, including Boluarte, as well as some diplomats, have dismissed his maneuver as an attempted coup.
In an unexpected speech to the nation, hours before debating a vacancy motion in Parliament, Castillo has announced the dissolution of the Chamber and the creation of an emergency government.
“In response to the citizen claim throughout the country, we made the decision to establish an emergency government aimed at establishing the rule of law and democracy, for which purpose the following measures are issued: temporarily dissolve the Congress of the Republic and establish an exceptional emergency government”, he announced.
The Police rejected the “breaking of the constitutional order” and has urged the public “to respect the Political Constitution and to remain calm”, as well as to “trust in the institutions of the State”.
