Will the European Commission agree on gas price limits? 15 countries, including Poland, are pushing for it

pressured by fifteen countries, including Poland, announced that it would propose the introduction of temporary price limits for gas. The President of the Commission and Petr Fiala, the Prime Minister, who now lead the work of the Union, have sent a letter to the leaders of the member states on this matter.

The European Commission, however, on gas price limits?

“The European Commission will provide a detailed outline of its proposal for a market correction mechanism, a temporary cap that takes into account the conditions and safeguards requested by Member States,” the letter reads.

The head of the Commission and the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic announced that the draft regulations in this matter will be presented before the extraordinary meeting of energy ministers of the EU countries scheduled for February 24. It is expected that then the proposals will be accepted, because temporary gas price caps are supported by a group of 15 countries, including the EU majority.

So far, the European Commission has been reluctant and focused criticism from some capitals for defending the position, because it was this country that was the most vocal in opposing gas price caps. The president of the European Council, Charles Michel, also recently called for a proposal for legislation in this matter as soon as possible and urged the Commission to act.

Has the European Commission changed its mind? Why?

These reports are all the more sensational as it has been looking for an agreement on imposing limits on gas prices for several months. On Monday, however, it seemed that this dispute was over, and the European Commission would eventually withdraw from this idea due to the lack of consent among member states.

Instead of caps on gas prices, the EC proposed to introduce a “market correction mechanism”. However, we informed that such a solution may not satisfy those EU members who supported the limits. According to Reuters, the lack of an agreement on limits and unsatisfactory alternatives could have led to limit supporters wanting to block the entire energy package. Was such an ultimatum given to the EC and therefore changed its mind? unknown.
