Russia begins to suffer the Ukrainian attacks on its own ground. A new attack, allegedly caused by a suicide drone, has caused a fire at the airport of the Russian city of Kursk. It is a city located 200 kilometers from the border with Ukraine. The attack has not caused fatalities, as reported by the governor of the Kursk region, Roman Starovoit, who has detailed that intelligence agencies are in place investigating what happened.
“As a result of a drone strike, an oil storage tank caught fire in the area of the Kursk airfield. There were no victims. The fire is localized. All intelligence agencies are in place,” Starovoit stressed in a statement on Telegram. Kursk airport was closed to civil aviation on February 24, the day the Russian invasion of Ukraine began.
The news of the fire comes one day after at least three people have died and another five have been injured due to an explosion registered at an airfield located in the surroundings of the Russian city of Ryazan, located about 200 kilometers from the capital, Moscow. Another explosion was also recorded at the Saratov airfield, a key infrastructure for the launch of missiles from Russia to Ukraine.
So far, Ukraine has yet to directly claim responsibility for any of the attacks. If confirmed, Monday’s attacks would be the farthest from the Ukrainian border since Moscow invaded the country on February 24. However, ‘The New York Times’ has confirmed according to its sources that the attacks that were carried out this Monday were launched with drones from Ukraine and that in one of these attacks they had a team that was near the air base.
The Russian Defense Ministry has directly accused Ukraine of what it has called “acts of terrorism designed to disable long-range aircraft“. From the Kremlin they point out that Ukraine launched “Soviet-made unmanned aircraft” into Federation territory. The attack also coincided with the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to the Crimean bridge, damaged two months ago by Ukrainian forces In addition, in retaliation, the Russian Army has launched a new massive bombardment against about twenty civilian and military infrastructure targets in various Ukrainian regions.
