The countries of the European Union failed to agree on the maximum gas price. ‘The discussion was quite heated and you all know that there are very divergent opinions,’ said Czech Industry Minister Jozef Sikela, who chaired the meeting.
The Polish Minister of Climate and Environment referred to the lack of an agreement. When asked whether Poland would force a vote on this issue on December 13, she replied that “absolutely yes”. Anna Moscow pointed out that many countries – e.g. Hungary, Spain or Lithuania – is determined. Now, those who say no are definitely in the minority. The Germans are not saying no today, they say they are ready to continue working. We say: “I check” – she added.
The Prime Minister appeals to the European Commission
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki appealed to the European Commission to use all possibilities to lower the ceiling of natural gas prices for consumers in Europe. After the summit of the Visegrad Group in Košice, the head of the Polish government stated that the proposed ceiling was too high.
– A price cap has been proposed for gas that is so high that some people call it homeopathic. The price of gas that has been determined is definitely too high. Together, the entire V4 plus Spain, plus Italy, plus Greece, we proposed a maximum gas price cap, but the maximum at a level acceptable for producers, and especially for gas users. We expect a much more decisive proposal from the European Commission, stressed Mateusz Morawiecki.
The gas plan proposed by the European Commission consists of several elements – joint purchases of blue fuel and its sharing in crisis situations. Initially, it was also supposed to contain price caps for gas. The draft regulations in this matter were presented by the Commission the day before yesterday, after several months of pressure from 15 countries, including Poland. According to this group, the legislative proposal is a step in the right direction, but changes are needed, for example with regard to the proposed price cap.
