Thousands of Cubans take to the streets to demand “freedom” and the regime blocks the internet

Thousands of Cubans have taken to the streets this Sunday in Havana and with a unanimous cry: “Freedom!” If the situation on the Caribbean island under the Castro dictatorship led by Miguel Díaz Canel, now the pandemic aggravates the hard life of Cubans who, fed up, have decided to face the tight government control by taking to the streets. Several testimonies on social networks have denounced internet blackouts that would be preventing images and videos of the demonstrations, as well as the violent repression of the Canel regime, from being disseminated throughout the world.

The famous Malecón in Havana has been filled with cries of “freedom, freedom!” this Sunday. A flood of thousands of people have taken to the streets to protest the situation on the island. And, of course, Castro’s repression has preyed on the leaders. There have been arrests and the forces of order have been mobilized to silence the protest as soon as possible.

That has not prevented the images from being disseminated through social networks under hashtags such as #PatriaYVida. The videos of Cubans protesting and asking for freedom are one of the most effective ways for the Cuban opposition to transmit to the world what is happening on an island under tight control of the state apparatus.

Cuba is going through a difficult situation aggravated by the pandemic. This Saturday, the Cuban dictatorship has tightened control measures due to the increase in Covid cases, unable to contain the pandemic on the island.

The Cuban Ministry of Public Health has pointed out in a statement that, taking into account the epidemiological situation of the country, these measures have been taken to contain the spread of Covid-19 cases and thus also reduce the risks associated with international travelers.

Cubans who arrive at the airports of these tourist enclaves must go through a mandatory isolation of 14 days in the hotel facilities, and later they will not be able to leave the tourist areas.

In addition, for Cuban travelers arriving at these two airports, luggage restrictions have also been applied, with each passenger being assigned only one suitcase.

The Ministry has also imposed a health check on all airport, transport and tourism workers on arrival and departure from their workplaces, as well as antigen testing for those who are most exposed to the disease.

In the case of national and international travelers who arrive in the country through the rest of the Cuban airports, the International Sanitary Control protocol approved so far is maintained.

Cuba has registered 6,750 new cases of coronavirus this Saturday, which join those already confirmed and place this figure at 5,501,862 positives. In addition, 31 new deaths have been added and the total amounts to 1,490 deaths.
