Shortly after learning the figures from the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE), after 99% had been scrutinized, former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his confidence in winning the elections against President Jair Bolsonaro in the second round and stressed that the result today is just an “extension”.

“We are going to win the elections,” Lula said in a speech in a Sao Paulo hotel before co-religionists and journalists.

“The fight continues until the final victory,” he added in reference to the ballot that will face the current president.

The leader of the Workers’ Party, who governed Brazil between 2003 and 2010, recalled that he had never won an election in the first round and stressed that tomorrow, Monday, he will begin campaigning to achieve victory on October 30.

“As my birthday is October 27, maybe I will receive it as a gift, like in 2002,” said the former trade unionist, surrounded by some of his most important collaborators and his wife Rosângela “Janja” Silva.
