Thomas Lane, one of the Minneapolis Police officers involved in the murder of African-American citizen George Floydhas been sentenced this Thursday to two and a half years for violate your civil rights when you were not given medical care after he alerted almost thirty times that he could not breathe.
Lane is now waiting to also know what his sentence will be for declaring himself in May guilty of second degree manslaughterand which will foreseeably be known September 21st. Both the Minnesota Prosecutor’s Office and his defense have jointly requested a three-year prison sentence.
He is one of four former Minneapolis Police officers convicted of violating Floyd’s constitutional rights during that fateful arrest on May 25, 2020 which led to his murder.
Hearings have not yet been scheduled for J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao, who are expected to receive longer federal sentences than Lane. The state trial was scheduled for last month but was ultimately pushed back to later this year.
In June 2021, the former police Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison after twelve members of a popular jury found him guilty of second degree manslaughter, third degree murder Y second degree murder. Then in December, he was found guilty of violating Floyd’s civil rights, for which he faces other 25 years in prison plus.
