Croatia to introduce the euro? “The reforms strengthened the economy and paved the way for joining the single currency”
The report indicated that Croatia is ready to adopt the euro currency despite the COVID-19 pandemic, high inflation and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. According to MEPs, Croatia already has a higher level of price convergence compared to other Member States that have not adopted the euro. “Nevertheless, Parliament expects the Croatian government’s continued efforts to ensure further price convergence and that the introduction of the euro will not lead to an artificial increase in prices,” underlined.
– The reforms undertaken by the Croatian government in recent years have strengthened the economy and paved the way for Croatia’s accession to the single currency. It is obvious that joining the euro area is the right decision for the country, its businesses and citizens, as well as for various sectors of the economy, such as tourism, said Siegfried Muresan, the project’s rapporteur.
MEP Margarida Marque, chairman of the European Parliament’s working group on the euro, said that Croatia’s accession to the euro area was the first significant European integration process since Brexit and marks the further expansion of the euro in the Balkans.
The euro area may gain a new member. But Croatia has to wait for the final decision
The opinion of the European Parliament will be forwarded to the euro area countries – they are responsible for the final approval of Croatia’s euro adoption. When this happens, Croatia will become the 20th member of the euro area. The single currency would be adopted on January 1, 2023.
