Gartner: Computer sales will fall by 10 percent in 2022

Analysts at Gartner predicted a decline in shipments and sales of computers and tablets in 2022. This was reported on the company’s website.

The firm estimates that around 310,000 PCs will be shipped to the global market by the end of the year, down nearly 10 percent from 2021. Tablet sales will fall by about 9 percent to 142,000 units. The smartphone market was also predicted to fall to 1.456 million devices, a decline of 7 percent.

“I expected the outlook for consumers this year to still be disappointing,” said Ranjit Atwal, senior analyst at Gartner. According to the specialist, this is due to the fact that earlier the personal computer market showed growth – in 2020 and 2021, users purchased a large number of devices. At the beginning of 2022, the situation worsened against the backdrop of a disruption in the supply chain of components, the crisis in Ukraine, and inflation. “There is no doubt that in any case there will be fewer people who will buy, there will also be some who will postpone the purchase for other reasons,” Atwal emphasized.

In conclusion, the firm said that shipments of cheap Chromebooks will drop the most, by a whopping 30 percent. Sales of PCs and Macs will fall less – analysts estimate a decline of three percent.

At the end of June, Counterpoint analysts said global smartphone shipments fell below 100 million units in May, the second time in a decade. The situation on the market is due to a shortage of components, rising inflation, a slowdown in production growth in China and the Ukrainian crisis.
