CTV News: AirTag’s smart beacon helps track down nine stolen cars in Canada

A car owner from Toronto, Canada got his vehicle back with the help of an Apple smart beacon. This is reported by CTV News.

Journalists talked about a man from Toronto who was able to return his Range Rover after theft. The car was stolen from a parking lot near the victim’s house, but the car enthusiast managed to track it down using smart AirTag tags hidden in the car. At the scene, police found nine previously stolen cars.

Two months ago, a car from a Toronto resident was already stolen – after this incident, the man hid three AirTag tags in different places in the car. According to him, when the first gadget was found, which was hidden in the glove compartment, the thieves could throw it away and calm down – this is what the owner of the SUV was counting on. After a repeated case of theft, the user recorded the alleged location of the car through the Find My application.

The man arrived at the indicated place, accompanied by police. In addition to the stolen Range Rover, eight more cars were found in a parking lot located in one of the industrial areas, which were considered stolen. The police noticed that AirTag is often used by attackers – they install beacons on cars parked in the city to track where their owners live.

In mid-June, American journalists reported that Apple’s AirTag tracker helped police find and apprehend a serial thief. The attacker stole the victim’s backpack, but did not know that it contained a smart beacon.
