GSMArena: senators urge the US Department of Commerce to install a single connector for smartphones
US senators sent a letter to the head of the US Department of Commerce with a request to install a single connector for smartphones sold in the country. This is reported by the GSMArena portal with reference to the document.
The letter was prepared by Senators Edward Markey and Elizabeth Warren. They noted that a standardized charging port for gadgets should be implemented. According to them, this is necessary to combat environmental pollution and overcome the economic inconvenience of users.
The letter also states that having to pay for proprietary charging is a financial burden as it forces users to purchase different chargers for every gadget they own.
Earlier, members of the European Parliament approved USB-C as a single connector for smartphones and tablets sold in Europe. Members of the European Parliament in the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection voted in favor of a proposal to switch to a single format for all smartphones. The voting ended with 43 votes in favor and two against.
