Emotion recognition application for people with disabilities

When we feel some strong emotion, we instinctively show it with facial expressions. We smile when we feel joy, we open our eyes wide when we feel surprise, and we wince when we feel disgust.

People with disabilities or part of the autism spectrum sometimes have difficulty recognizing these emotions in the people with whom they interact. The TINC Foundation (Technologies that include) and the digital native company Globant, developed a free application to help people identify the basic emotions that another human being can feel: joy, fear, sadness, surprise, disgust and anger.

“Many people with disabilities have difficulties relating and bonding with others on a day-to-day basis. To do so they need language and, if they do not know it, they are left out of social relationships. Having a better ability to process images makes it much easier for them to communicate and understand messages through them. That is why in this application we work together with the organization “Yo Tambien”, who was in charge of photographing the models, portraying each one of the emotions that the app records”, says Pablo Fiuza, president of the TINC Foundation.

“Emocionalmente” is aimed at people of all ages and works through photos and descriptions that explain the physical manifestations of emotions and each one is associated with different everyday situations that produce it. The application also allows sharing emotions with others and helps users navigate through their moods and overcome difficult moments.

This application “will allow people to recognize basic emotions, learn to put themselves in the place of others and understand what the other feels. In this way they will be able to improve their personal ties and their ability to know themselves and to relate to their environment”, explains Graciela Roldán Schuth, responsible for content at the DANE Project.

“Emotionally” is available for Android phones on Google Play since April 2 of this year.
