Facebook removed fake profiles linked to the Belarusian KGB. “Involved in cyberespionage”

The Meta concern – the owner of Facebook – has published another quarterly report on threats on the Internet. The company informs in it that it detected the activity of entities associated with the governments of Russia and Belarus that were involved in cyberespionage. As the report reads, the activity of these fake profiles intensified shortly before the Russian attack on Ukraine.

Disinformation in Polish and English

Facebook discovered, among other things, a coordinated disinformation campaign in Polish and English that was carried out on the day of the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. False profiles then spread false information that Ukrainian troops surrendered without a fight, and Ukrainian leaders fled the country.

Earlier, the same profiles wrote about the ill-treatment of migrants from the Middle East who tried to cross the Polish-Belarusian border illegally.

Facebook is noticing an increasing number of attacks

In mid-March, one of the fake accounts connected with the Belarusian security services called for a protest to be organized in Warsaw against the Polish government. As Facebook says, the account and related entries were deleted on the same day.

Recently, the Meta concern has also noticed a growing number of cyber attacks on the accounts of Ukrainian military commanders. Hackers hack their accounts and publish videos urging Ukrainian soldiers to surrender.

Polish services detected increased cyberactivity

Janusz CieszyƄski, responsible for digitization at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, spoke about the problem of increased activity in cyberspace at the end of March. In Polish Radio 24, the minister said that since the beginning of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the Polish services have been observing the increased activity of Russian hackers, but – as he noted – Polish security measures have not been breached.

– Over the last few weeks we have not seen a situation in cyberspace that would threaten our security in any significant way – said the minister. He added that this is due, among other things, to the quick launch of the alarm system by the government.
