The Casio G-Shock are the famous indestructible watches of the Japanese brand, and now they have been given a little focus smart that, although it does not compare with that of the large smart watches on the market, it does have many features that make them a good option for a large group of users.
We have had the G-Shock GBD-H1000 tested for a few weeks, which is the first watch that Casio has created focused on its use in sports, and more specifically to run with it.
This family is part of the latest additions to the G-SQUAD line of sports watches from G-SHOCK. The first feature to take into account is its five integrated sensors. It has an optical sensor to measure heart rate, along with orientation, altitude/barometric pressure and temperature sensors, as well as an accelerometer to count steps.
These five sensors help keep you in direct contact with current activity in real time. The ability to receive GPS signals allows you to access location information when you need it.
Within our tests we found these sensors to be quite accurate compared to other devices, especially GPS and heart rate.
As for its design, it has a minimum diameter of 55 mm, but due to the strap system, in “vertical”, the measurement is greater. The Casio H1000 is a large watch, as is very much the style of Casio’s G-Shock family. And this is due precisely to the structure necessary to maintain that promise of indestructibility that the Japanese offers.
The silicone and stainless steel shell gives you great drop protection and peace of mind for unlimited underwater use. It resists up to 200 meters underwater without even blinking.
It has four diagonal interaction buttons: screen change, modes, light and back. In the case of on-screen information, data can be quickly accessed with a single click. For the “Modes”, we can go through all the measurements made by the equipment and activate them with the central button on the left side.
As for its interface, to alternate the view between these spheres we have to press the upper left button, marked as “Disp” in the part of the solar bezel. For its part, the lower button, marked “Mode”, allows you to switch between the different modes: time of day, heart rate with graph, timer, stopwatch, ABC function (altimeter, barometer, compass), activity summary with the list of our workouts, training status, VO2Max and recovery time.
The G-SHOCK MOVE app allows us to unify our metrics into measurable data. It works on iOS, Android and web, a system that helps configure access to activities and see daily, weekly or monthly activity in graphs. With it we can allow the clock to react to notifications from our smartphone and export our data to other apps, like Strava or Google Fit, and connects via Bluetooth.
The watch allows you to receive all notifications that are received on the watch. On the screen you can see the name of the application that generates the notification and a brief detail of it.
However, you cannot see the notification directly. The normal thing would be that, pressing the main button, we would enter the notification to see all the details; but, when you press that button, all it does is return to the time display. To see it, you must enter the notification mode indicated above, for which it is necessary to press the mode button about seven times. This can be a hassle if you are used to seeing everything with a single click. In fact, it is easier to take your phone out of your pocket and see the notification directly.
The battery is another of the mainstays of this watch. Your battery never runs out, that is, it will never leave you due to lack of energy. It is charged via USB and the energy required to keep it running at full capacity can last between a day and a day and a half. However, once this power runs out, it uses its sunlight sensors, keeping it powered up for weeks.
In short, this watch is ideal for physical activity outdoors. We will be able to measure our steps, measure our response to exercise, position our location and use it for weeks thanks to its integrated solar charge that, although it limits weight functions, will not leave it abandoned as a smart watch regular.
It comes in various colors, including white, black, red and a transparent version. (I)
