Mozilla has just released the latest version of Firefox marked 98.0.1 to users. The last update brought some minor changes, but by far the most famous is the bans on Russian search engines.
Yandex and Mail.ru have been banned from Firefox
Specifically, these are two websites that are at the forefront of Russian websites and are one of the most visited sites on the Russian network – Yandex and Mail.ru. When installing the latest version of Firefox, these search engines will not be selectable as the default search engines available from the browser’s address bar.
Yandex is an international Russian-Dutch Internet company based in Moscow. It is famous primarily for running the largest Internet search engine in Russia (it has more than half of the local market), but it also offers other services – incl. mail, maps or an online translator. The competitive Mail.ru is famous for delivering Internet mail to Russians, but it also provides a search engine and is an aggregator of news from Russian-language websites.
People who previously used Yandex or Mail.ru search engines as their default will now be transferred to the Google search engine. Mozilla did not address the matter, but it is no secret that both Russian services “favored” the Kremlin media spreading propaganda in search results. Perhaps, therefore, Firefox users will benefit from the change.
