A research expedition, which left South Africa last February, has found in good condition the remains of the Endurance. It’s about the boat of the legendary Anglo-Irish polar explorer Ernest Shackleton what sank in 1915.
Thus, 106 years after losing track of him, images of his appearance have been recorded, something absolutely unheard of for researchers. For the past two weeks, the researchers have combed the seabed twice a day with six-hour dives in the frigid waters of the Weddel Sea, in the Antarctic Ocean, the heart of Antarctica. And they have done it with help of state-of-the-art search vehicles and robotssome robots with which they have tracked an area of more than 250 square kilometers until finding the two large golden letters and a five-pointed star, today taken by marine life.
As the expedition has shown, the ship It is submerged more than 3 thousand meters deep. At, Ernest Shakelton and his 27 men attempted to reach the South Pole in 1914. The mission went awry a year later when the ship ran aground on ice. This is shown in the images taken by the ship’s official photographer who, like the rest of the crew, remained for a few months sheltered in the cabins. In November 1915 the ship ended up sinking.
Scientists have been looking for it for years. In fact, bad weather forced to suspend an expedition in 2019 and now they have had to face blizzards, ice and temperatures of up to -18 degrees to find this historic ship, remains that represent a real milestone for polar research
