Azucena Vieites illustrates the poster for the Musical Fortnight

The artist Lily Vieites (Hernani, 1967) is the author of the poster that will be the image of the 83rd Musical Fortnighta festival that will take place between August 2 and 27.

The image that Vieites has chosen for the poster is a photograph or, rather, a capture of a video image, in which the reflection of the sun’s rays on the sea can be guessed: “I like that idea of ​​connecting the image with the moment in which the event is going to take place: August, it is summer and that idea of ​​summer or intense light that is projected on a certain surface”, he explains.

The work of Azucena Vieites is found in the collections of numerous institutions and museums such as the San Telmo Museoa, the Reina Sofía Museum, the Artium in Vitoria or the IVAM in Valencia. In 1994 she participated in the foundation of Erreakzioa, an initiative for the development of proposals between artistic practice and feminist thought.

With regard to the invitation received from the Musical Fortnight, Vieites is very grateful: “I received it with great joy, although it also gave me a sense of responsibility. I knew about the Fortnight, but as one more Gipuzkoan citizen; and I had seen the posters that they had been done to date, but until then. In any case, I have to say that I think it is a wonderful initiative; it is very good to commission the image of a festival of the characteristics of Fortnight from Basque artists”.

During the presentation of the poster for the Musical Fortnight, its director Patrick Alfaya has assured that they do not expect “very serious” conditions as a result of the war in Ukraine. After some programmers have launched a boycott against Russian artists, Alfaya has stated that the Fortnight will not veto anyone based on their nationality.
