Disabling the updates feature will not protect iOS and Android smartphone owners from remote blocking if Apple and Google decide to do so. This conclusion was reached by experts in the IT industry interviewed by RBC.
So, an expert in the field of information security Alexey Lukatsky explained that disabling auto-updates will not help protect against blocking, since such features are built-in and are not related to updates. In turn, Igor Mikhailov, a specialist in the Group-IB digital forensics laboratory, cited as an example that both iOS and Android have similar functions that allow you to block gadgets remotely, for example, in case of theft.
Lukatsky suggested that the only option is to completely disconnect the smartphone from the Internet, however, in the case of Apple, this also does not look like a reliable step, since the iPhone cannot turn off Wi-Fi, after a certain period of time it turns on by itself.
On the night of March 2, Apple announced that it was introducing restrictions for the Russian region. In particular, sales of all gadgets in Apple online stores are being stopped. In addition, the corporation has disabled the Apple Pay payment system and “other services.” What exactly was banned is not disclosed. The company noted that such a decision was made because of the Russian special operation in Ukraine.
Earlier, Ruslan Permyakov, Deputy Director of the NTI Competence Center “Technologies of Trusted Interaction” based on TUSUR, told what needs to be done to protect information in case Google resources are blocked in Russia. The expert advised me to download my data from the services to some medium – for example, to a hard drive. He said that Google has a service for backing up mail and all data in the account. “You need to go to your account, go to Google Account Management, then go to the Data and Privacy section, where you can download data or make a backup, choosing everything you need,” the specialist urged.
