A native of China created a scheme to replace fake iPhones with real ones and was able to embezzle about a million dollars. This is reported by 9to5mac, citing Chinese media.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced that Haiteng Wu, 32, was sentenced to 26 months in prison and a heavy fine for creating a criminal scheme to repair Apple smartphones and thereby robbed the company. For three years, Wu managed to turn in fake iPhones to the service centers of the IT giant, tricking them into receiving real Apple devices instead.

It is specified that the man set up the scheme by purchasing a large batch of devices very similar to Apple smartphones. The Chinese received real IMEI numbers, which are unique for each gadget, and with the help of special software, he was able to pass them off as original iPhones. When such a phone was connected to the master’s computer, a notification appeared on the screen that the device was under warranty.
It is believed that the criminal received new iPhones instead of defective smartphones and sold them. According to the court decision, Haiteng Wu will have to pay almost two million dollars in damages. Since Wu, who confessed to the crime back in May 2020, served time while awaiting trial, he was released after the verdict was announced.
In July 2021, Bloomberg journalists talked about Ukrainian Microsoft employee Vladimir Kvashuk, who robbed the company of ten million dollars using a criminal scheme. The fraudster was sentenced to nine years in prison and compensation.
