FT: EU will prohibit the export of consoles to Russia as part of a new sanctions package
The Supreme Commissar of the European Union (EU) for foreign affairs Kai Callas proposed to ban the export of game consoles in Russia. This was reported by the newspaper Financial Times (FT).
According to Callas, Brussels considers various types of goods that help Russia conduct hostilities. “Even the console for video games, because, apparently, it is from them that they control the drones,” she said. Separately, the Supreme EU Commissioner for Foreign Affairs has identified the PlayStation Game console from Sony and Xbox from Microsoft.
Kallas emphasized that game consoles will fall into a new package of sanctions, which will be announced at the end of February. Thus, legal import of prefixes will be prohibited. Callas also added that the list will also be included in chemicals “necessary for the Russian military industry”, as well as restrictions on the import of liquefied natural gas.
The three largest manufacturers of game consoles – Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony – stopped selling their products and left the Russian market in March 2022. FT journalists turned to the company for a comment, but did not receive an operational answer.
Earlier, the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov commented on information on the extension of EU sanctions against Russia. “We still call them illegal restrictions that contradict international law,” said the official representative of the Kremlin.
