Google urged to disable 2G on smartphones

Google Calls for 2G Shutdown to Protect Against Hacker Attacks

Google specialists have called on users to disable the “dangerous” 2G standard on their smartphones. This is stated in the company’s blog.

According to Google engineers, phone users are often attacked using SMS Blasters, cellular communication simulators that allow attackers to bypass the mobile operator’s security protocols and send a phishing message to the device.

The article states that such attacks can only be carried out through a 2G network. 2G is an abbreviation for the second generation of wireless telephone technology, which was launched in 1991. The attack can be carried out without any experience in hacking and using equipment sold on the Internet.

“SMS Blaster simulators are very attractive to fraudsters, since hackers’ costs pay off well,” the corporation’s specialists noted.

Google experts noted that Android smartphones have the ability to forcefully disable 2G communications. This feature first appeared on Google Pixel series devices, and is now available on phones running Android 12 and higher.

At the end of June, it became known that Google engineers would add an automatic diagnostics mode to smartphones based on Android 15. With its help, it will be possible to find out both the individual state of the device components and the overall assessment of the phone’s health.
