Tattoos can be dangerous? Scientists with a surprising discovery. Bacteria detected

The latest research by American scientists suggests that tattoo inks, even unopened, can be contaminated with bacteria that cause infections. This was demonstrated by one third of the materials analyzed.

that the latest research by the US government’s Food and Drug Administration has shown that various types of bacteria have been found in containers of tattoo inks and permanent makeup. It turns out that some of them serve the conditions prevailing in human skin.

One third of the carcasses were contaminated. Even the unopened ones

“Our research suggests that unopened, sealed carcasses may contain anaerobic bacteria, which are known to thrive in low-oxygen environments, such as those found in the skin. The carcasses may also contain aerobic bacteria,” said Dr. Seong-Jae Kim, one of the study’s authors. “This suggests that contaminated carcasses may be a source of infection by a variety of bacteria. These results underscore the need to monitor these types of products for both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, including pathogenic organisms.”

The results showed that almost 35 percent of the examined carcasses were contaminated. The researchers most often detected the anaerobic bacteria Cutibacterium acnes, which in many cases is responsible for the occurrence of acne and infections in patients with endoprostheses, vascular catheters and valves. Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus saprophyticus were also present in some of the carcasses – bacteria associated with, among others, urinary tract infections.

Scientists want to continue research. They remind about the risk

– The increase in popularity of tattoos in recent years has been accompanied by an increase in the number of cases of complications and adverse effects. It is important to emphasize that bacterial infections are just one type of possible complications. Immune responses such as inflammation or allergies and reactions to toxic substances are a significant part of the problems. In light of our study, we want to emphasize the importance of continuous monitoring of these products to ensure their safety – added Dr. Seong-Jae Kim.

His research team intends to continue their research. Scientists want to learn how to detect bacteria faster and develop a method to prevent their formation.
