On the night of July 1-2, a sudden flash appeared over central Poland. It was a bolide, or a bright meteor. The initial analysis of the phenomenon was prepared by the Skytinel research project, which brings together meteorology enthusiasts.
Unusual phenomenon in Poland. Meteoroid “rushed towards Earth”
A bright flash of light appeared in the sky a few minutes after midnight. It was only visible for a moment. A detailed analysis of the phenomenon was prepared by the Skytinel project. The fireball was recorded by two observation stations located in the Świętokrzyskie province. “The meteor flew almost exactly between them, so the recordings were very detailed and allowed us to precisely determine the trajectory. We also had several control recordings from slightly more distant locations – including from our colleagues in Hungary, for which we are very grateful!” – we read on the Skytinel Facebook profile.
The project presented the results of the analysis concerning this astonishing phenomenon. “Calculations showed that the meteoroid began to be visible at an altitude of 95.42 km and rushed towards the Earth with an initial speed of ~ 25 km/s. During its flight, it slowed down to ~ 9 km/s and burned up completely at an altitude of 38.45 km. Therefore, it did not cause a meteorite fall,” informs Skytinel.
“Falling star” over the Polish sky. Seen in three provinces
According to Skytinel’s meteorological analysis, this unusual phenomenon was observed by residents of three provinces – Świętokrzyskie, Mazowieckie and Lublin. “During the flight, the meteoroid flashed several times, which means it was fragmented.
The brightest flash was definitely brighter than the full Moon (-12 mag), and witnesses reported a dull noise that was heard after the flyby. This is the effect of the shock wave associated with the supersonic speed of the cosmic guest,” we read in the Skytinel analysis. The meteoroid had previously orbited between Mars and Jupiter.
