GizmoChina: Android applications will no longer open in Huawei smartphone OS

The devices of the Chinese brand Huawei will not run the Android OS and related applications, GizmoChina reports.

Since 2019, due to US sanctions, Huawei has been developing its own operating system, HarmonyOS. According to media sources, the future version of the OS will not have native support for Android and applications released for the system from Google.

The material states that HarmonyOS NEXT, announced at the end of January, was developed from scratch – it is no longer considered an adapted version of Android. In this regard, any Android applications will no longer open on devices running HarmonyOS NEXT.

According to journalists, engineers have completely rewritten the HarmonyOS code. Thanks to this, system performance has increased by 30 percent, energy consumption has decreased by 20 percent. In addition, a set of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, Harmony Intelligence, has been added to the OS. HarmonyOS NEXT is expected to be available to users by the end of the year.

Earlier, sources from Wccftech stated that Huawei engineers tried to clear the Huawei operating system of everything American. Thus, source code fragments related to Android, Linux and other systems were removed from the OS.
