Omdia: demand for cheap smartphones has increased by 33 percent in the global market
Analysts at research company Omdia have recorded increased demand for affordable smartphones. The corresponding press release was published on the PRNewswire portal.
According to the company, the number of phones sold under $150, or about 13.3 thousand rubles, has grown by 30 million units or 33 percent over the past year. If at the beginning of 2023 their number was 90 million units, then over the year it increased to 120 million units.
Ultra-cheap devices have also become more in demand. Thus, the global market for devices cheaper than $90, or about 8 thousand rubles, grew by a record 87 percent over the year – to 34 million units. In their study, Omdia experts explained this phenomenon.
The material says that the main reason for the increased demand for inexpensive gadgets is the expansion of the range of cheap devices in developing countries. Users of affordable devices are forced to buy new smartphones more often, since their manufacturers provide a short support period.
Demand for premium smartphones, which cost more than $600, or about 53 thousand rubles, has also increased over the year. During the reporting period, manufacturers sold 73 million versus 70 million devices in 2023.
Earlier, Canalys analysts recorded a recovery in the European smartphone market. Year-on-year sales growth was 2 percent.
