“Someone from the American police” calling and asking you to press button “1”? This is a scammer who pretends to be someone’s phone number. Experts warn against a refreshed version of the “Border Guard” scam.

“We are observing a massive telephone attack on Poles’ numbers” – . This time, fraudsters impersonate foreign police and claim that our ID document was used for financial embezzlement.

The website explains that criminals impersonating “someone from the American police” during a telephone conversation ask you to press the “1” button to obtain more information about the alleged use of our data. “Just pressing ‘1’, even if you did, does not pose any threat. The problem arises if someone ‘enters into dialogue’ with the scammers and provides them with additional information” – .

According to the website niebezpiecznik.pl, calls to the alleged “foreign police” are made from spoofed Polish and Belgian numbers (spoofing involves impersonating someone’s phone number). “An attempt to call back the number ends with a conversation with its confused owner who has no idea about anything because the scammers simply used his number,” the website explains. Fraudsters call from different phone numbers and it is impossible to block receiving such calls.

Experts explain that this is a refreshed version of the “Border Guard” scam. Also in this case, fraudsters call from different phone numbers. In the latter case, after answering the call, you can hear a recorded message informing you that a parcel addressed to us containing “illegal substances” was allegedly detained at the border, and an “arrest warrant” was allegedly issued. The scammer encourages you to press the “1” button to talk to the “investigating officer”
