Android will add a feature to control your smartphone using facial expressions
Google has announced the launch of a hands-free control function for Android smartphones using facial expressions. The Verge drew attention to this.
The company has published the source code of the Gameface project – special software designed to integrate facial expression control options into applications. Program developers were able to add facial expressions, head movements or gestures to them, with the help of which users can control the device without hands.
Originally announced at Google I/O in 2023, Gameface was designed for desktop computers and aimed at gamers. However, a year later, the company scaled the new special feature to smartphones and any applications. Google noted that with the help of the new tools, users will be able to control the functions of the smartphone by “making a face” and move the cursor on the device screen with eyebrow movements.
“Through the camera, the smartphone seamlessly tracks facial expressions and head movements, translating them into intuitive and personalized control,” the company explained. Journalists from The Verge recalled that Google engineers were inspired to create the Gameface project by paralyzed streamer Lance Carr.
Earlier, Google announced that its proprietary digital wallet service, Google Wallet, would stop working on older smartphones. Thus, the service application can be installed on devices based on Android 8 or a newer OS.
