A Pole reached the top in OpenAI. He took up a key position. “One of the greatest minds”

Jakub Pachocki will take up the position of chief scientist at OpenAI. He will take over the job of the departing Ilya Sutskever, one of the founders of the company that gave the world ChatGPT.

OpenAI just showed a new version of its artificial intelligence model – GPT4o – on Monday. And already on Wednesday, who founded the company and was its chief scientist. In his farewell post, he announced that he would be replaced by Jakub Pachocki. After a while, the information was confirmed by the company’s president, Sam Altman.

Jakub (Pachocki – ed.) will be our new chief scientist. He is one of the greatest minds of our generation

– wrote the head of OpenAI.

Pole at the top in OpenAI. Jakub Pachocki became the chief scientist

“I’m thrilled that he’s taking over,” Altman writes. “He has led many important projects here and I am confident he will lead us toward rapid and safe progress in our mission to deliver artificial general intelligence (AGI) – ed.), which will benefit us all,” we read further.

Pachocki himself also issued his statement, starting by informing that the departing Ilya Sutskever introduced him to the world of deep learning and was his mentor and collaborator for many years. “His incredible vision of what deep learning could become was the foundation of OpenAI and the entire field of artificial intelligence. I am extremely grateful to him for our countless discussions, from the most complex ones about the future of artificial intelligence development to those that concerned purely technical. Ilya – I will miss working together,” Pachocki wrote.

The Pole became famous last year, during the premiere of GPT-4. As the president of OpenAI wrote at the time, without the Pole’s effort, the new model would not have been created at all.

GPT-4 truly was a team effort across our entire company, but it was Jakub Pachocki’s overall leadership and technical vision that was extraordinary and without it we would not be here today

– wrote the president of OpenAI in 2023 on X.

Jakub Pachocki has been working at OpenAI for over seven years. As he explains in “MIT Technology Review”, the creation of GPT-4 required, among other things, introducing more parameters on which the chatbot is based. “This basic formula hasn’t changed much over the years, but it’s still like building a spaceship, where you have to fit all the little pieces together and make sure none of them break,” we read in the magazine.

How much Sutskever is leaving OpenAI. He was the one who led last year’s rebellion

OpenAI is the hottest company of the last two years. However, this is not an exemplary business run. Last year, there was a clash at the top within the company.

As the media reported, regardless of the threats associated with artificial intelligence, which did not please OpenAI’s main researchers. The company’s management dismissed Altman, a move that Sutskver allegedly supported. He ultimately changed his mind and signed the letter to reinstate Altman as president of OpenAI. However, he paid for this with a position on the board, and his position in the company has been unclear ever since.
