Since the first months of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Starlink terminals have been used by both Ukrainian soldiers to maintain communications and the civilian population. Thanks to satellite Internet terminals, she can contact her loved ones during the occupation. During the war, as a result of fighting and thanks to the activities of Russian services, the terminals also fell into the hands of Putin’s army. Now the US authorities and Space X have announced that the illegal use of the devices by Russians has been blocked.
The Pentagon blocked Russians’ access to Starlinks
– The US, together with the government of Ukraine and SpaceX, stopped the illegal use of Starlink terminals – announced John Plumb from the US Department of Defense. The agency reported the situation on Thursday, May 9. “For now, we have managed to contain the Russians, although I am sure Moscow will continue to try to find ways to use Starlink and other commercial communications systems,” Plumb stressed. Although “it will still be a problem, I think we have already dealt with it and found good solutions with both Starlink and Ukraine,” he said.
However, the US Deputy Secretary of Defense for Space Policy declined to provide details on what tactics, methods and procedures are being used to end Russia’s illegal use of Starlink terminals. Representatives of the Ukrainian government also did not comment on this situation.
Space X has denied cooperation with Putin
In February, the Ukrainian army drew attention to the fact that the Russians were using Starlinks at their positions in the occupied territories of Ukraine. Later, this information was also confirmed by Ukrainian military intelligence. The American think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW) indicated that Moscow was to purchase access to SpaceX technology from the United Arab Emirates, and the transaction was most likely to take place in Dubai. Elon Musk’s company commented on this information, emphasizing that it does not cooperate with the Russian government or Putin’s army. Space X almost immediately after publishing this information took action to deactivate Starlink terminals.
