Hackers are attacking TVs from this manufacturer. A serious vulnerability has been detected in the system

Some LG TVs with WebOS were vulnerable to attacks that allowed them to take control of the device. If you have a TV from a Korean manufacturer at home, update the software as soon as possible.

Researchers from Bitdefender discovered a vulnerability in the WebOS software. This took place in November 2023. However, information on this subject was revealed only now, when LG has prepared appropriate corrections for TVs based on this system.

We found several issues affecting WebOS versions 4 to 7 running on LG TVs. These vulnerabilities allow root access to the TV to be gained by bypassing the authorization mechanism

Once the main system account is compromised, attackers can potentially add a new user to the TV system, increase privileges, and execute a specific command. Theoretically, it is even possible to take control of the device’s built-in microphone or gain access to data stored in applications.

Hackers can take control of LG TVs. What devices are these?

According to experts’ findings, among the over 91,000 devices susceptible to attacks using this vulnerability, 800 TV sets are located in Poland. So if you have an LG TV with Internet access at home, be sure to update the WebOS software.

To do this:

1) Enter the TV settings (gear button on the remote control);

2) Go to the All settings section;

3) Go to the General section;

4) Select the “About TV” option;

5) Click the “Check for updates” button.

Bitdefender experts also published information about the WebOS versions and TV models that were vulnerable to attacks:

  • webOS 4.9.7 – 5.30.40 on the LG43UM7000PLA TV
  • webOS 5.5.0 – 04.50.51 on the OLED55CXPUA TV
  • webOS 6.3.3-442 (kisscurl-kinglake) – 03.36.50 on OLED48C1PUB TV
  • webOS 7.3.1-43 (mullet-mebin) – 03.33.85 on OLED55A23LA TV.
