“We are in a state of cold cyber war with Russia.” Gawkowski warns

– This is not a real cyber war yet, but we are undoubtedly in a state of cold cyber war with Russia and its allies – said Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski during his speech at the Secure 2024 conference.

A few days ago, the government plenipotentiary for cybersecurity published its first report, which shows that in 2023 there was an over 100% increase in cyberattacks compared to the previous year. It is no secret that this is related to the increasing activity of groups linked to the Kremlin and allied countries of the Russian Federation.

Krzysztof Gawkowski, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs, referred to these alarming data when he attended the Secure 2024 conference organized by the Scientific and Academic Computer Network (NASK) on Tuesday.

– I cannot yet say that we are dealing with a real cyberwar with Russia, but it is undoubtedly a cold cyberwar – said Gawkowski.

The number of incidents and threats from APT groups is increasing, and countries are often unable to respond to these attacks. If we add the factor of the war in Ukraine, I can confidently say that while we are not yet dealing with hostilities, we can already be talking about a full-scale Cold War conflict in cyberspace.

– added the head of the Ministry of Digital Affairs. Gawkowski also pointed out that threats today come not only from Russia itself, but also from its allies, including Belarus.

Shocking data. “80 thousand cyber incidents on the Internet”

In 2023, “over 80,000 cybersecurity incidents were handled” – according to the report of the government plenipotentiary for cybersecurity. As the authors of the document point out, this means an increase of over 100%. compared to 2022.

As we read in the report, in 2023 the activity of “groups conducting illegal activities in the digital world also increased, ranging from hacktivists, through cybercriminal groups of a commercial nature, to groups associated with other countries or even directly operating within the institutions of adversary states (APT) “.

While there is no one-size-fits-all solution to completely eliminate cyberattacks, there are measures you can implement to remain vigilant, reduce risk, and mitigate the impact of these attacks. Our goal is to effectively fight cyber threats. This is one of my priorities

– said Krzysztof Gawkowski during the presentation of the report.
