The Register: computers will become more expensive due to high AI requirements

The global computer market began to recover along with rising prices. This was reported by The Register.

In the first quarter of 2024, computer shipments increased by several percent. Specialists from the analytical company IDC estimated the growth at 1.5 percent, their colleagues from Canalys – 3.2 percent. In absolute numbers, according to IDC and Canalys, 57.2 and 59.8 million devices were shipped to the market, respectively.

The authors named interest in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies as one of the reasons for the increase in supplies. In the near future, experts predicted an increase in the average cost of a PC. This will happen due to the high demands of AI services and future shortages in the processor and memory market.

Canalys said that by the end of 2024, almost 50 million computers with artificial intelligence support will be sold worldwide. New devices will be purchased by those users who refused to update after the coronavirus pandemic. IDC manager Jitesh Ubrani noted that rising component costs will provide additional earning opportunities for PC and component manufacturers.

In mid-March, specialists from IDC said that PC shipments fell by nine percent in 2023 due to the pandemic and inflation. Dell became the market leader.
