Yórgos Lánthimoswith ‘Kinds of kindness’; David Cronenbergwith ‘The shrouds’, and Paolo Sorrentino (with an Oscar)with ‘Parthenope’, are some of the filmmakers who will fight for the Palme d’Or at the 77th Cannes Festival in mid-May, along with Francis Ford Coppola, Paul Schrader or Jacques Audiard. Coppola will return to the Festival with ‘Megalópolis’, a science fiction film financed by the director himself and with a cast led by Adam Driver and Giancarlo Esposito, the organizers announced this Thursday. The story covers the story of an architect who wants to rebuild New York City after a devastating disaster.

For its part, Lantimos is presented with ‘Kinds of kindness‘, after directing the film ‘Poor Creatures’ with which he won four Oscars, including Emma Stone for best actress. On that occasion, she played the protagonist of the film based on a novel by the Scotsman Alasdair Gray that reinterprets the story of Frankenstein through a woman who is brought back to life by a surgeon (Willem Dafoe) using unorthodox methods. ‘Kinds of kindness’, however, tells three different stories. First, that of a man who tries to take the reins of his life. That of a police officer who was looking for her missing wife and finds her completely changed and that of a woman who wants to find someone special to turn into a spiritual leader.

In ‘The shrouds‘, its director picks up the initiative of a recently widowed businessman and chooses to build a device that allows him to connect with the dead inside a shroud. This tour features the work of Vicent Cassel, Diane Kruger and Guy Pearce, among others. In ‘Parthenope’, the protagonist is a woman. The story of Paolo Sorrentino, which already has an Oscar for Best International Film for ‘The Great Beauty’ (2014), will be set in Naples, but little else is known about it. Only it will be released on Christmas 2024.
