Peter Higgs is dead. The Nobel Prize winner in physics died at the age of 94

Peter Higgs, British physicist and Nobel Prize winner, has died at the age of 94 – announced the University of Edinburgh. The scientist became famous for predicting the existence of the “God particle”, the existence of which was confirmed nearly 50 years after the theory was formulated.

Peter Higgs’ theory, which turned out to be his greatest achievement, was formulated in 1964. The scientist, together with a group of five other physicists, proposed the existence of an elementary particle, which years later was dubbed the “Higgs boson”. Its discovery was announced only in 2012 thanks to experiments conducted at the Large Hadron Collider. Thanks to this, in 2013 Peter Higgs was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. recalls that after receiving the distinction, the physicist only modestly told journalists: “It’s very nice to be right sometimes.”

Peter Higgs has died. “His name will be remembered as long as we deal with physics”

The work of Peter Higgs allowed scientists to answer the question of how elementary particles obtain their mass and became a real breakthrough in the field of physics. – The ideas that were born in the head of Professor Higgs had a profound impact on our understanding of the universe, matter and mass – commented on the reports of the scientist’s death, Professor Alan Barr from the University of Oxford. – He was also a true gentleman, humble and polite. He always gave due credit to others and encouraged future generations of scientists, he recalled.

The University of Edinburgh, with which the scientist was associated for decades, called Peter Higgs “a true talent whose vision and imagination have enriched our knowledge of the world around us.” The famous physicist Brian Cox also commented on the scientist’s death on social media. “Thanks to the Higgs boson, his name will be remembered as long as we deal with physics,” he wrote on the X website.

He learned about receiving the Nobel Prize during a chance meeting with a neighbor

People who remember Peter Higgs without exception note his modesty, politeness and shyness. The story that the physicist found out about receiving the Nobel Prize only after a few days has gone down in history. Since he didn’t have a cell phone, his neighbor told him the information during a chance meeting. – She congratulated me on my success, and I asked: “what success?” – recalled the scientist.
