James Bond is inextricably associated with an elegant, handsome man who cannot stay away from women. He loves martinis and luxury cars. The character has already been played by fans such as Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan, Roger Moore, and most recently Daniel Craig.
James Bond was supposed to be a woman
When Lashana Lynch took over the title of 007 in the movie “No Time to Die”, there was an uproar among fans. Many fans of the character cannot imagine that an agent with a license to kill could be a woman, although this is not a new idea.
A new biography of Fleming written by Nicholas Shakespeare reveals that Bond was supposed to be a woman from the beginning, and the current discussions about changes are not the result of the so-called “woke culture”. “Since the mid-1950s, many actors had been offered the role of Bond. Gregory Ratoff then came up with the idea for Susan Hayward to play Bond. Ian considered many options. From Richard Burton to James Stewart,” we read in the book quoted by IndieWire.
The creator of James Bond did not approve of the choice of Sean Connery for the role
Hayward has already had five Oscar nominations, and for “I Want to Live!” in 1958 received the statuette. Screenwriter Lorenzo Semple Jr. from Variety in 2012 admitted that the reason why the creators considered a woman for the iconic role may be outrageous today.
“Ratoff was interested in Hayward because Bond was thought to be somewhat unreliable and a bit stupid. So Gregory thought it would be a good idea to make Bond a woman – Jane Bond,” recalled Lorenzo Semple Jr.
Ultimately, the role of Bond went to Sean Connery, but the creator of the character did not like this choice. Ian Fleming accused the actor of, among other things, the lack of ability to use courtly English. The writer found Connery a simpleton.
