According to , the annual growth in both the value and volume of Polish exports amounted to 1.4%. For comparison, total German imports in 2023 decreased by almost 10%, while Polish exports to Germany increased by 1.7%.
Polish export. What goods are most sold?
According to PIE, the export of medium and high-tech goods has been growing the fastest over the last 5 years. In the case of the former, the Polish export hit is especially electric batteries, the sales of which increased by 350% in 2019-2023, exceeding the value of EUR 12 billion.
However, among highly advanced goods, telephones had the highest sales (an increase of 49%, over EUR 3.2 billion). As the authors of the PIE report note, the high shares of medium and high-tech goods in exports (30-35 percent and 16-19 percent, respectively) mean that the Polish economy is increasing its technological capabilities and the economic complexity of exports.
Car parts and accessories remain the foundation of Polish exports. The value of their exports in 2023 amounted to EUR 16.7 billion and 4.8%. share. The Covid declines were short-lived because, according to the data provided in the report, they were limited only to 2020 (-16% y/y, to EUR 10.8 billion).
Polish export. What is behind the success despite the economic slowdown?
As we read in the PIE report, Polish producers remain strongly involved in regional supply chains. Favorable structural changes are evidenced by both the positive trade balance (EUR 6.1 billion in 2023) and the high intensity of imports and exports in this sector (so-called intra-industry trade; the Grubel-Lloyd index measuring it exceeded 76%).
According to the report, calculations indicate that Polish exporters sell products that are more intensively processed and of better quality, which translates into, among others, to improve their competitiveness.
