Solar Eclipse 2024. Where and when will it be possible to watch it?

There will be a total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8. Where and when exactly will they be available to watch?

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8. The phenomenon will be visible primarily in North America, i.e. in Mexico, the USA and Canada. Unfortunately, it will be almost invisible in Europe.

Solar Eclipse 2024. Where and when will it be possible to see it?

As the astronomy popularizer, science journalist and traveler Karol Wójcicki describes in detail on his Facebook page (“”), the Moon’s shadow will wander primarily in the western hemisphere of our planet. According to the information posted by Wójcicki, the “American” eclipse is to begin on April 8 at exactly 18:38 Polish time, when the Moon’s shadow “will fall in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, from where it will head towards the coast of Mexico.” From 20:07 the shadow of our satellite will move through Mexico. First, residents of the Mazaltán area will see the phenomenon, then Durango, Torreon, and finally Pietra Negras near the US border.

Less than half an hour later, at 8:32 p.m., the eclipse will enter the United States. Texas residents will first see the phenomenon. Next, the Moon’s shadow will pass across the states of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont and Maine. There are several large cities in the path of the eclipse (or in the immediate vicinity), such as San Antonio, Austin, Fort Worth, Dallas, Indianapolis, Columbus, Cleveland and Detroit.

From approximately 9:12 p.m., the total eclipse will move along the US-Canada border. According to Wójcicki, the Moon’s shadow will pass Toronto at a very short distance (mainly on the coast of Lake Ontario), but will cover half of Montreal. Residents of Ottawa, on the other hand, will have to travel several dozen kilometers to the eclipse belt.

According to the researcher, the eclipse will end at 21:35:55 in the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean. Thanks to this, it will be possible to observe its partial form, e.g. in Iceland. Residents of Ireland and parts of Spain will be able to see a very shallow partial eclipse just before sunset.

Eclipse. Trivia

In connection with this year’s solar eclipse, several activities will be undertaken to better understand the phenomenon. The most important of them is the launch of three rockets by NASA to investigate disruptions in the ionosphere and in Earth’s communications (link to the material on this topic above).

What is worth noting, the eclipse is scheduled to culminate at 20:17, when the area around Nazas, Mexico, will be plunged into darkness for 4 minutes and 28 seconds, which, according to Karol Wójcicki, is to be the second such moment in the last dozen or so years (the only longer eclipse took place in 2009, when almost 6 minutes).

However, the eclipse will not be visible in Poland. The last eclipse in our country took place in 1954, and the next one is scheduled to take place in 2135.
