9to5Mac: in the iOS 17.5 update it will be possible to disable other people’s AirTag beacons
Apple has released a beta version of an iOS update that protects against unwanted surveillance. This was reported by 9to5Mac.
Experts have discovered an option in the iOS 17.5 code that allows you to disable the tracking function of AirTag smart beacons and GPS trackers. Such devices can be placed on users by stalkers or other criminals in order to monitor their movements.
If a foreign beacon is detected, the Find My service will send a notification that a new tracking device has been found on the network: “This product is not certified in the Apple Find My network. You can disable this object and prevent it from transmitting its location to its owner.” After this, the user will be able to turn it off.
9to5Mac journalists recalled that Apple and Google had previously stated that they would team up to create a unified defense against unwanted trackers. The intentions of the IT giants were supported by Samsung, Tile, Chipolo, Eufy and Pebblebee.
Currently, the iPhone can detect a third-party AirTag, but there is no way to disable it. To detect AirTag on Android smartphones, you need to download a special application.
In mid-March, it became known that Apple could not prove that its AirTag smart tag is not a weapon of stalkers. US District Judge Vince Chhabria in San Francisco admitted that the stalkers used the device.
