Google: for AI to work on a smartphone you will need at least 12 gigabytes of memory

Google experts have revealed how much RAM on a smartphone will be consumed by artificial intelligence (AI) assistants. This became known from the Made by Google podcast.

According to engineers, the Gemini AI virtual assistant will be installed on Google smartphones. However, it will not work on some devices due to hardware limitations. Thus, Shang Chau, vice president of software for devices and services, said that for the AI assistant to work correctly, at least 12 gigabytes of RAM will be required.

Chau named the flagship Google Pixel 8 Pro as a smartphone suitable for working with AI. He emphasized that new technologies depend on the amount of resources provided, so the Gemini service is not available on the Pixel 8 model, which has 8 gigabytes of memory. However, Google will release the Gemini Nano assistant for this device.

In addition, Shang Chau said that some AI functions will constantly occupy a certain amount of RAM – for example, smart answer. This way they will always be ready to work.

In December, Apple engineers announced that the smartphone’s permanent memory, rather than RAM, could be used to process AI-related operations. The corporation called its invention a breakthrough for the implementation of advanced LLM programs.
