PKO BP has been carrying out the “green revolution” for many months. Under it, expired plastic payment cards are replaced with cards made of 70% plastic. from the so-called Ocean Plastic, i.e. plastic from bottles found in coastal areas of seas and oceans.
In turn, at the end of 2023, the first customers of PKO Bank Polski received debit and credit cards made of 100% PVC. recycled (rPVC).
We are starting to issue payment cards made of recycled materials on a mass scale. This is an important step in the development of sustainable payments that are consistent with our beliefs and the bank’s strategy

PKO BP focuses on digital cards. The beginning of a revolution?
However, this is not the end of the changes that the largest bank in Poland is preparing. From Tuesday, PKO BP customers can use digital credit cards. Thanks to this, after receiving the bank’s decision to issue a card, they no longer have to wait for a letter with a piece of plastic.
The digital card works exactly the same as its physical version. We can use it for contactless payments, online payments and add it to services such as Apple Pay or Google Pay. The only significant difference concerns the CVC/CVV code.
Digital PKO BP card. Where to find the CVC/CVV code?
while in the case of a traditional plastic card, this code was unchanged throughout its validity period, in the case of a digital card, this code will be changed periodically, which should have a positive impact on security. The code will be displayed in the IKO application and the iPKO website.
Soon, PKO BP customers will also be able to use digital debit cards, which will also offer a variable CVC/CVV code mechanism. The next stage of this revolution is the possibility of completely resigning from the plastic card at the stage of submitting the application by the customer.
In the long term, this will lead to the elimination of plastic payment cards from our customers’ wallets
– says Paweł Placzke, quoted by Bankier.pl. According to PKO BP, customers’ wallets currently contain 10 million payment cards issued by the bank. This is the equivalent of about 50 tons of plastic.
