Android Central: in Europe, smartphones will receive an additional year of warranty
Manufacturers of smartphones and other gadgets for the European market must provide an additional year of warranty for their products. Android Central reports this.
The European Council and Parliament have approved a preliminary agreement to facilitate the repair of equipment in the European Union (EU). Manufacturers will be required to add an additional 12 months to the two-year warranty period for devices sold in the EU. Also, individual EU countries may increase the additional warranty period.
“With the agreement reached today, Europe is making a clear choice in favor of repair rather than recycling,” said Belgian State Secretary for Budget and Consumer Protection Alexia Bertrand. According to her, Europe will not only reduce the amount of waste, but also create new jobs.
In addition, manufacturers will be required to publish information on spare parts for equipment, including smartphones, on their websites. Authorities will monitor the availability of components and the cost of repairs at service centers.
In December, automotive experts interviewed by Scientific American called repairing an electric car battery dangerous. According to experts, it is impossible to perform such work efficiently, inexpensively and safely without qualifications and experience.
