The end of fake text messages? The government has an idea on how to deal with fraudsters

For two weeks, a system for exchanging information about fake messages has been operating in Poland, which is intended to help put an end to SMS fraud. The government will force telecoms to block such messages, which should limit the number of this type of scams.

SMS and e-mail fraud is a real plague in Poland today. It is probably difficult to find a person who has never received a message about the alleged need to pay extra for a package, pay a fictitious invoice or request to update data on a crafted website. Now the government has a chance to put an end to fake news. At least those that are distributed via SMS.

No more fake text messages? Operators will have to block them

As he reminds, the obligation to block fake SMS messages will soon come into force, which should reduce the number of victims of this type of scams. January 17 this year NASK’s Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT NASK) has launched a system for exchanging information about fake news. The system will be used by CSIRT NASK, the police and the Office of Electronic Communications (UKE) to notify telecommunications operators about new SMS campaigns by fraudsters.

For now, entrepreneurs can express their willingness to join the system, but – as the website writes – on March 25, the obligation to block the so-called smishing (SMS phishing, i.e. attempts to impersonate e.g. institutions or companies in SMS messages). Telecoms will have to block the delivery of messages to subscribers whose templates will be published in the system, e.g. by the CSIRT team.

Krzysztof Gawkowski: The fight will reach a higher level

– I am convinced that thanks to the launch of the system for exchanging patterns of fraudulent messages, to which telecommunications entrepreneurs, the Office of Electronic Communications and the Central Office for Combating Cybercrime can connect from today, we will fight against telecommunications abuses and limit the number of fraudulent SMSes that we all receive every day, will reach a higher level – said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski, quoted by Infor.

At the same time, recipients will receive text messages sent by public entities. They will use the so-called overrides, the list of which is maintained by CSIRT NASK. Let’s hope that the system will actually eliminate text message fraud or at least significantly reduce it.
